"The problem is not the problem, the problem is your attitude about the problem" Captain Jack Sparrow
Wouldn’t it be great to have 22 advisors just waiting for you to consult on any problems or issues you are experiencing? Over the coming weeks, I will use a brainstorming technique from Putting The Tarot To Work by Mark McElroy, to present the attributes and qualities of each of the Major Arcana for you to consult as Mentors.
We are all creatures of habit and that includes our problem-solving process. I use this technique with my clients to shake up their thinking. It helps them look at problems and issues from a totally different perspective and find answers they hadn’t previously considered. Each of your mentors will help you to think from a unique perspective and take a different approach to finding solutions. All will give you credible answers from their own strengths and experience.
All you do is look at the image of the card, ask a question and imagine the answer you would receive from this Mentor's perspective.
Key #O - The Fool
The Fool is a total beginner and though inexperienced, is full of enthusiasm and possibilities. Think of him as the fool from fairy tales who, against all odds, ends up winning the Princesses hand in marriage. The knights and noblemen who were considered more qualified for the job were either too afraid to start or fell by the wayside as they attempted to complete the tasks set by the King.
Remember, he gets the prize and just because he does things differently doesn’t mean that he’s completely stupid and that’s because the Fool is also a Trickster.
Wikipedia says of the Trickster: “in mythology, and in the study of folklore and religion, a trickster is a character in a story (god, goddess, spirit, man, woman, or anthropomorphisation), which exhibits a great degree of intellect or secret knowledge and uses it to play tricks or otherwise disobey normal rules and conventional behaviour.”
Think of Loki or Puck or more up-to-date tricksters like the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, Beetlejuice, The Joker and of course my personal favourite, Jack Sparrow. Tricksters don’t just bend the rules, they re-create them.
You might not think he is very serious and while you’ve got your nose to the grindstone, doing everything it says in the book (and getting nowhere) - he's rushing in where angels fear to tread and getting results.
Sometimes looking at a situation through eyes that have not become blinkered or tarnished by dogma can bring up new and different solutions. Sometime, by taking an unconventional route, you just might find that elusive treasure of wisdom.
So, take a step back from the situation, look at it through the eyes of your favourite trickster and ask, “In this situation what would Jack Sparrow do?” (well that’s who I'd ask, you can choose your own trickster ). Let me know how you get on.

About The Tarot Coach
My business experience ranges from project management of large-scale website builds and integrated marketing campaigns to managing digital start-ups and training companies. I have been involved in the Internet since the early 90’s and have worked with clients in most industries, both public and private sector. In 2012 I retrained as a business and transformation coach while continuing to work as a contractor in the digital field.
My spiritual background is in exploring various religions, practices and philosophies, from the Abrahamic religions to Witchcraft, Shamanism and Druidry. The Tarot has always fascinated me and the study of its symbolic meanings, in the western esoteric tradition, has introduced me to Kabbalah, Astrology, Alchemy and so much more.
